NUTRITION
Nutrition 101
ACE Manual Volume 2002
There is so much to learn about nutrition and energy expenditure that it can overwhelme
your brain and make you want to give up before you try. Let's just make it a simple concept instead.
Let's just say that this is your day from the time you wake up to the time you
sleep....
6:00--9:00--12:00--3:00--6:00--9:00
When you wake up your body has
been fasting throughout the night. That drop in insulin could be your weight loss advantage or DISADVANTAGE-Play
your cards right. This is the best time to tap into fat with a 20-30 minute cardio session, and/ or the most
crucial time to eat a nutritious meal. Let me show you why:
Let's say you wake up but don't eat until 12:00. Your insulin would take a
drop from 6:00to 9:00am storing fat for your starvation ("but I'm not starving", you say) YOUR BRAIN THINKS DIFFERENT.
Remember we as humans are designed for famine and times without food and water----this leads to fatty deposits----and ugly
fat. We are designed to move, so eat clean and keep your furnace above the line by eating every three hours.

Lose Weight Faster With Fiberous Carbs
USDA 2005
Carbs come in different GLYCEMIC levels. Meaning that your
insulin will respond quicker to SUGARY and STARCHY carbs whereas your body responds least to FIBROUS (green, plant like) CARBS.
Those can include the following:

Are you stuck in the '70s, and afraid of fat? Fat-free
still registers in some people's psyche as a healthy way to eat. It's time for an attitude adjustment, because all fats are
not bad. In fact,
some
are essential to health, including vitamin and mineral absorption, hormone production and cell structure.
New USDA Fat Recommendations
The U.S. government has changed the recommendations for the 2005 Dietary Guidelines.
The old guidelines had fat way up top of the pyramid, in the narrowest part, next to sugar. Fat was to be kept to a minimum,
which made consumers think that all fats are bad. However, some actually help lower cholesterol and prevent disease, leading
the USDA to change the fat recommendation.
They've flipped the pyramid on its side, so that consumers understand that within
the fat category, some fats should be included regularly, but others should only be eaten occasionally, if at all. The new
pyramid reflects the ruling that takes effect on January 1, 2006. Soon consumers can read the number of grams per serving
of trans-fat, which is linked to coronary heart disease.
Good Fats/Bad Fats
Populations who eat their fat calories from nuts, seeds, olive and canola oil,
avocado and fatty fish like salmon, sardine and mackerel remain healthier than those who eat a lot of fried foods, fatty meat
and hydrogenated fats in packaged foods.
Fat tastes good, and makes food taste good. But, since fat has twice the calories
of protein and carbohydrate, most people can't eat it indiscriminately. Fat needs fine tuned, especially when you're
trying to lose weight on a balanced program.

-
Shed more calories in the morning because moderate exercise
for 20 minutes jump starts your metabolism.
-
Mid-day stretching between 10 and 2 is when joint flexibility is
highest--joints are two degrees warmer mid-day.
-
Late afternoon is a good time for weightlifting because your lungs
and muscles are at their peak.
-
Stamina is greatest after dinner, so go for a swim or do some cardio.

TUMMY THICKNESS
by: Tosca Reno
As we age the metabolism slows down and growth hormone drops resulting in loss
of muscle mass and the metabolism drops even lower. The only true solution is to build muscle mass by weight training.
Building muscle helps the metabolism stay elevated as well as releasing growth hormones. Choose healthy fruits, veges,
whole grains and lean protein. Don't forget to drink lots of cool water as well.

Combining Plyometrics With Bodybuilding
by:Mark Casselman MS, CSCS
You've heard the benefits of doing plyos along with weight training.
Question is , what days???
1.TRY NOT TO DO HEAVY LIFTING AND PLYOS THE SAME DAY
2.COMBINE LOWER BODY STRENGTH TRAINING WITH UPPER BODY PLYOS AND
VICE VERSA
3. GET 24-48 HOURS RECOVERY BETWEEN PLYO SESSIONS

SUPPLEMENTATION
Top
picks for Supplements and their use:
HEMP OIL:
Excellent for skin and consists of the highest concentration
of gamma-linolenic acid
CLA-Conjugated Lionoliec Acid:
Found in red meats and
milk fat. CLA is responsible for the maintenance of lean muscle tissue and helps
the body burn more fat for fuel.
7-Keto DHEA-3:
Better known as Acetyl-7-Oxo-Dehdroepiandrosterone,
is secreted by the adrenal glands (located above the kidneys) and is sourced primarily from the Mexican Yam and other plants. It holds the patent number 5,296,481 with studies that confirm its ability to promote
weight loss when combined with a sound nutrition and exercise plan.
Borage, Fish, and Flax Oils:
Essential Fatty Acids
which aid in tissue repair, proper bodily functions including the brain, and helps to promote fat loss.
Whey Protein Powders:
Protein is great for
people on the go or anyone who wants to maintain healthy, lean muscle tissue.
Multi-vitamins:
Being active or inactive,
you may not get all the necessary vitamins throughout your day, so proper supplementation is key to achieving a healthy body.
Calcium:
Women need this most
of all, but it is so readily absorbed and used that women actually use more than the recommended dosage a day. If you lack milk or broccoli, GET A PILL!!!!
Food:
Food??? You may ask, “why food”? Well, it’s simple. Food is energy. Without food, all of
the other supplements are obsolete, because you need a balance of food to function at your highest level!!!!
Supplement well!

Exercise regularly, just avoid exercising within three to four hours
of bedtime. Also avoid stimulants like caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol. Try to get regular sleep and stick to a
regular sleep pattern. It also helps to take a time-out during the day. Creating a cozy sleep environment,
designing a wind-down routine and avoiding computers, bill-paying and TV at night can help also.
Prevent Dementia
Truth be told, the more scientists discover about the roots of dementia

Controlled
Obsession
By:
Kelly Nauyokas, CPT
What determines what is on the borderline of obsession with weight? Could dangerous weight-loss aides, starvation diets,
and over-exercising be the main fix or could low carbohydrate fads be “best new thing”? There is more of an underlying problem in society and the obsession to be thin in not new. The look of extreme thinness is out, fitness is in, and muscle is what women now want to achieve. Just
when we think we’ve heard it all, an even more startling problem has come into the picture: steroids. Being a female fitness and bodybuilding competitor I ,personally, have not taken these substances.
I do know of women who have tried controlled substances such as deca durabolin, Anavar, Winstrol Depot, and even a very liver-damaging
drug, Primobolin. Many of these women still continue to add it to their weight-loss and fitness regimen. Unfortunately, the uproar of athletics and fitness has lead coaches, society,
and peers to take the hard work and dedication out of athletics by focusing more on the reliance of some athletes
use of chemical substances. Many people have the misconception that these drugs can make athletes feel that they
need steroids to get better, faster, and more muscular to help them become an elite athlete (Volkow, 2005).
The recently popularity of steroids now is affecting women as young
as nine to begin using bodybuilding steroids to reduce body fat (Johnson, 2005). Charles
Lesalis, Pennsylvania State University Professor of the Health and Human Development, states that the abuse of steroids and
young women is at an all time high right now and that overall 5 to 7 percent of girls under the age of 16 have admitted to
using these substances(Johnson, 2005). These illegal steroids have been under major
investigation with Congress and have become a strict focus involved in numerous hearings since March 17th, 2005
(Volkow, 2005).
Anabolic steroids are the synthetic version of the human hormone testosterone.
Steroids can be taken by pill, injected, or transdermally. First of all,
there is no regulation without a prescription. These drugs are highly abused
and can easily result in an overdose. The negative side effects differ from person
to person and there is no true way to know how they will affect an individual regardless of whether it has been prescribed
or not (Volkow, 2005).
The possible side effects far outweigh the benefits and the body's response to steroids is definitely not as beneficial
for women as they have proven for men and their testosterone levels. The effects of
steroids on women are paranoia, masculine features, acne, enlarged genetalia, excess facial hair, inconsistent periods,
or amenorrhea, which is the cease of menstruation. Worst of all, "roid rage" or agressive explosive behavior results
when steroids interfere with the mormal production of estrogen levels (Volkow, 2005).
Secondly, the negative
side effects include and are not limited to the rise of LDL or the “bad” cholesterol in blood lipid levels. The dangerous amount of toxins can be carried through the blood, damaging the liver and
causing more complications which could become severe and life-threatening. The
liver is taxed by cleaning out the toxins from the blood. Externally, the
risk of an injection site abscess is even greater from a variety of air-borne bacteria.
This problem results from poor sanitation of needles, being given or having access to a contaminated bottle,
and the reuse of needles. Reusing needles also leads to a greater risk of HIV
and Hepatitis (Volkow, 2005).
In
addition to the facts stated, the steroid effects on women are paranoia, masculine
features, acne, enlarged genetalia, excess facial hair, inconsistent periods, if not a cease of menstruation (amenorrhea), and worst of all it, “roid rage” when steroids interfere with the normal
production of estrogen thus leading to abnormally aggressive behavior.
Where exactly do these steroids come from and who is bottling them? We need to ask society where they are coming from and how to regulate the traffic of these substances. All
too common is the possibility of getting a bottle of injectables
or pills with little or no potency at all. With so much controversy, it makes us wonder why society ever felt good about using these controlled substances. NIDA, the National Institute
on Drug Abuse, continues to support research on the understanding of
steroid abuse and the prevention of abusing
these steroids. ATHENA, a group which targets female athletes, is
being adopted by schools in 29 states and in Puerto Rico ( Volkow,2005).
With the consequences of these substances and the obsession of weight loss, when will America
truly notice that enough is enough? We need to teach women to love themselves for who they are, and that there is no "magic pill." True weight loss is long term. Informing women on the proper ways to get toned and healthy can help women to realize that the do not need to use a controlled substance to help them
to get the body they want or the performance level they strive for. Hard work and dedication in fitness is the only true way to achieve these levels of muscularity naturally, and a realization of that fact should discourage use of anabolic substances to control weight.
